Description

Anyone performing US Department of Transportation (DOT) mandated breath alcohol testing must be trained as a Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT), and individuals performing non-DOT regulated testing are encouraged to do the same. This course follows the training curriculum as prescribed by the Department of Transportation (DOT), the procedural requirements of alcohol testing as stated in the (49CFR part 40 [Federal register Vol. 59, NO. 31, 2/15/1994, pkg. 7340-7366]) and amendments to the rules. Device certifications available: Lifeloc Phoenix 6.0, Lifeloc EV 30, Intoximeter Alco Sensor IV-RBT IV, Alco Sensor IV with Memory, Alco Sensor VXL. Course is equipped with closed captioning.

For complete BAT certification the student is required to demonstrate proficiency in administering an alcohol test using their specific EBT instrument. The student must perform a minimum of 7 mock tests on a live subject using their EBT instrument. These mock tests must be monitored by a certified BAT instructor. This portion of the training is not included in this course.

This document completes Phase 1 (of 3) only for a BAT Certification.  Phases 2 and 3 consist of Manufacturer Specific device training and Mock proficiency demonstration.
Please provide this online certificate to your instructor when prompted.

Objectives

This course details the DOT-required procedural training for BATs including:

- Evidential Breath Testing Device Methodology
- Preparing for the alcohol test
- Conducting a DOT alcohol test
- Obstacles to completing a test
- Information disclosure and confidentiality
- Record-keeping and required logbooks
- Quality Assurance Plans (QAPs)

There are two main components to BAT training that are prerequisites for certification.

  1. The student must be trained on the rules and regulations through a 6 ½ hour classroom lecture (8 hours including lunches and breaks). Refresher BAT students must complete 3 hours of rules and regulations training. Alternatively, component 1 can be accomplished via a video or computer based training program, as long as the program meets the requirements of the BAT Model Course.
  2. Component 2 requires the student to demonstrate proficiency in administering an alcohol test using the EBT instrument. The student must perform a minimum of 7 mock tests on a live subject using their EBT instrument. These mock tests must be monitored by a qualified instructor.

One challenge with the test is that I cannot go back to have a look at previous questions or change the answers. The course material was presented in a monotone that made it difficult to stay focused.
